The First Tee Promotes Nine Healthy Habits

Categories: 2019, January, Newsletter

How are you doing with your New Year’s resolution to make your family healthier?

Changing your habits, no matter how well-intentioned, is hard. It can be difficult for children and parents to make healthy food choices and get enough physical activity when they are exposed to environments that do not support healthy habits.

Making attempts to change the environments where your children spend their time can help them achieve and maintain a healthy weight by making it easier to eat nutritious foods, get at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily, watch less television, and consume fewer foods and beverages high in added sugars or solid fats.1

Fighting obesity and weight problems in kids remains a serious health concern. More than one-third of American children and teens are overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Children with obesity are at higher risk for having other chronic health conditions and diseases that impact physical health. Children with obesity are bullied and teased more than their normal-weight peers, and are more likely to suffer from social isolation, depression, and low self-esteem. 2

The First Tee of Silicon Valley wants to help change these statistics and provide a positive environment for your children. Our youth development program incorporates a Healthy Habit into each class along with teaching Life Skills through the game of golf.  The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits promote healthy, active lifestyles for young people. The Healthy Habit of “Play” states that a variety of energizing activities can help the body stay strong, lean and fit, and be fun in the process. In addition to focusing on physical Healthy Habits (Energy, Play, and Safety), our curriculum addresses habits that shape youth emotionally (Vision, Mind, and Family) and socially (Friends, School, and Community).

Golf is more than just a game that combines enjoying the great outdoors, life lessons, and quality time with friends and family. Our mission is to positively impact the lives of young people by providing a safe place to play and coaches who care.  Learn more about The First Tee of Silicon Valley program or ways to support us.
