Play is one of the The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits* – teaching participants that a variety of energizing play can help the body stay strong, lean and fit, and be fun in the process. Sleep and other forms of “re-charging” allow one to engage in play on a daily basis.
A new study (Feb, 2019) reported by Reuters Health states that just one in 20 U.S. children and teens gets the amount of sleep, exercise and screen time that doctors recommend for optimal health. JAMA Pediatrics research team validated that too little sleep or exercise, or too much screen time, can increase the risk of chronic health problems. These include obesity, mental health issues like anxiety and depression, poor academic achievement and unhealthy behaviors like smoking and drinking.
This current statistic further supports The First Tee of Silicon Valley not only teaching youth how to play golf but promoting healthy, active lifestyles. Our Healthy Habit: Play is seamlessly integrated in pre-class warm ups, in walking the golf course during play days, and through coach discussions with participants. As part of our youth development curriculum, we stress the benefits of how Play can also be incorporated into one’s daily life.
The First Tee of Silicon Valley is a safe haven that provides structure, direction and mentorship to many children who never dreamed of playing golf. Our participants are behaving better, are getting better grades and are healthier on the golf course, in the classroom, and in their local communities.
